We are proud to introduce the Justin Black Memorial Coaching Award, established in honor of longtime MCLL coach Justin Black, who passed away from brain cancer late last year. This award, which includes a generous monetary gift, will be presented annually to an MCLL coach who exemplifies the qualities that made Justin such a special mentor, leader, and role model.
During his eight years with MCLL, Justin coached countless players, including three All-Star teams. Some of his sons’—Joey and Ethan’s—fondest memories are of time spent with their dad on the ball field, where he taught the game with patience, optimism, and joy. Justin created an environment where every player felt welcome, encouraged, and supported. He understood that growth comes through effort and mistakes, and he made sure kids left the field smiling and eager to return.
Justin was equally respected for the way he carried himself. He treated fellow coaches, players, parents, and umpires with kindness and respect, even in moments of disagreement. His steady leadership, positive attitude, and unwavering sportsmanship made a lasting impact on everyone around him.
This award honors Justin’s legacy by recognizing coaches who inspire young athletes not only through the game itself, but through the character, encouragement, and example they bring to the field every day.
